Kijiyama Kokeshi originated in Yuzwa Onsen in Akita Prefecture. The Ogura family of woodworkers is credited with pioneering the Kijiyama style in mid 19th century. The region around Yuzawa City has a long history of woodworking and the Yuzawa district of Kawatsura is famous for lacquerware.  The head and body of Kijiyama kokeshi are carved from a single piece of wood and are decorated to look as though they are wearing kimonos.
