Tsugaru Kokeshi were first created in the city of Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture and it is the newest of the other traditional kokeshi. Tsugaru has a variety in the shape and pattern of the doll. One of the distinguishing features of this doll is that it has hair in a bob or a chignon, (topknot), without much decoration on the head, The bodies are often decorated with dramatic motifs which include peonies, camellias, irises, lathe lines and Ainu patterns. A typical design is the Daruma face representing Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism.
